July 2011. Brotherhood of The Wind/ Motorcycle Road Culture in America. Many of the summer Harley Davidson riders traversing this nation’s roads are from Europe. With their denim vests, leather chaps, tattooed arms and bandanas decorated with the stars and stripes, they looked no different than the rough and tumble riders we had been meeting at biker bars across the west. What gave them away was a Danish flag that blew from one of the seats. But that marker was rare. Most riders were thrilled to appear American, and they were as passionate, if a little more understated, than the other riders with whom we had spoken. Here, a group of Norvegians on 28 Harleys riding historic Route 66 in Texas. Piotr Redlinski for The New York Times.
